DO YOU NEED A LIGHT STROLLER FOR TRAVEL?
Whilst it is not absolutely necessary to have a different light baby stroller for travelling as the one you might usually use at home, I do highly recommend it. If you are travelling by plane you want a lightweight compact stroller to carry with you, remember you are going to have other bags to carry too, not to mention your little! Even if you are going on a road trip, you don’t want a big bulky stroller that is going to take up most of the room in the boot as you need space for other luggage.
Perhaps your considering not taking a stroller at all? Whilst that is also an option, if your little one is still taking naps during the day, a lightweight reclining umbrella stroller is a great place for little ones to take a nap whilst out and about sightseeing, so you don’t have to return to your hotel during the day. A light reclining stroller is also a great place for baby to sleep during layovers in air ports for those inconvenient flight delays.
A lightweight stroller with storage is also a great place to store baby’s things or other odds and ends you may carry with you whilst you travel. If travelling to hotter climates a lightweight pushchair is also far more comfortable for everyone than using a baby carrier.
Like anything there is also a negative to taking even the best lightweight buggy with you whilst travelling. It will be yet another piece of equipment that you have to carry around with you. You may have to carry the lightweight pram upstairs in some hotels, museums etc. However for me the benefits of having a lightweight baby stroller with you whilst travelling greatly outweighs the negatives.
TAKING A LIGHTWEIGHT STROLLER ON THE PLANE
Depending upon the size of your stroller, some airlines will make you check your lightweight portable stroller in at check in, some will let you keep it until you get to the gate of the plane and have the light pushchair ready for you when you exit the plane. Therefore it is usually not necessary to base the decision of your purchase on whether your light travel pram will fold down and fit in an overhead travel compartment on the plane. However if you don’t want to risk having to check your stroller in with the rest of your luggage you may want to ensure it is compact enough to stowed in an overhead locker.
OUR RECOMMENDATION FOR BEST LIGHTWEIGHT STROLLER FOR TRAVEL
Check out the tables below for a quick overview of the lightweight stroller reviews. It is divided into a table for single travel strollers and a separate table for the double travel strollers. Keep reading below for my full reviews and light pram recommendations.
SINGLE TRAVEL STROLLERS
DOUBLE TRAVEL STROLLERS
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A TRAVEL STROLLER
When purchasing the best lightweight pushchair for your child, consider the following:
1.SIZE AND WEIGHT OF TRAVEL STROLLER
Given the light pram is for travelling, the size and the weight is fairly important.
Ensure you get the lightest pram you can that still meets all your requirements. Can you carry it ok? Chances are you will need to lift it from time to time so you want to be able to carry it fairly easily – even with your child still in it!
Also consider the overall size of the lightweight travel buggy. Remember you are going have this light travel buggy inside your hotel room, so you don’t want it to take up too much room. You might also want to consider how compact it folds up if you will be taking it on road trips to ensure there is plenty of room for your bags.
2. AGE AND SIZE OF CHILD
Ensure you purchase the best lightweight stroller that is suitable for your child’s age. You may also want to consider purchasing a light buggy that will remain appropriate as your child grows
The best lightweight stroller for newborn will offer more support than a light stroller for toddler. A lightweight stroller for infant tends to be a little more bulky, whereas a lightweight buggy for toddler can be quite compact and light.
3. TYPE OF TRAVEL YOU WILL BE DOING
Consider the type of travel you will be doing as this may influence what is the best lightweight baby stroller for you. Will you be using it mainly for plane trips or road trips? You might want a super small lightweight stroller if you will be taking it on planes, whereas something a little bulker may suffice on road trips. You may even consider a lightweight travel system for road trips.
Will you be taking your lightweight baby buggy to destinations with good smooth pavements, or to places more off the beaten track where the wheels and suspensions may be an essential consideration?
4. COMFORT AND SAFETY
If your child is going to be spending a lot of time in the stroller whilst you are out and about sightseeing you want to ensure they are comfortable in it as well as you being comfortable using it. Look for features such as adjustable handles, padded handles and cup holders.
Ensure the stroller also has the appropriate safety features such as straps and braking system.
5. EASE OF FOLDING
You may well be folding and unfolding the stroller multiple times whilst travelling, often multiple times in a single day, so you want to ensure it is super easy to fold.
6. ADJUSTABLE FEATURES AND RECLINE
Not all strollers recline and for younger children and babies, it is highly recommended that you purchase a stroller that reclines. This allows your child to take a nap whilst you are out and about. Like any additional stroller feature though, this is likely to add bulk and weight to your stroller so consider if this is necessary before purchasing a stroller which reclines.
Other features that you may want to consider is whether it has a canopy and if it does the size of the canopy. What about a storage basket? A lightweight stroller with basket is great for travelling as it gives you somewhere to put both yours and baby’s extra things – they can however add weight to your stroller. Consider whether you are prepared to have a heavier and bulkier stroller before purchasing a stroller with these features.
